I copied some text from MS Word to texmaker, but I believe that's unrelated because this version, with my headers and newly typed text, does the same thing (using PDFLatex): \documentclass is for. the solution for me was: Control Panel -> Language ->for the English button choose 'options' (on the right) -> remove input method called 'english international' (and make sure you stay with the US option). The opening and closing quotes are both pointing the same way (as if they were all closing quotes). I had the same problem - when pressing the quote key, i had to press it again in order to get the double quote. Perhaps try going through and typing all the punctuation keys (both with and without shift) and see what you get Out of curiosity, what happens if you press the key. Use ALT 0147 and ALT 0148 for the left and right double quotation marks, respectively. Use ALT 0145 and ALT 0146 for the left and right single quotation mark or apostrophe, respectively. I'd be very surprised if there was no way to type at all. To use the numeric codes, press and hold the Alt key, then type the four-digit character code on the numeric keypad. ![]() I am (obviously) new to LaTeX and have about 40 pages of text where it seems like half the quote marks are going the wrong way for American English. The soft-keyboard should also give you a clue as to location on your keyboard of the key. Under the Replace as you type menu, make sure the Straight quotes with smart quotes box is ticked. Under AutoCorrect options menu, click on the AutoCorrect Options button.
